Outcome of the general election
The general election for the Parliament, løgtingið, was held Saturday the 19th of January 2008. The results show that both the Centre Party and the Independence Party have won an additional seat in the Parliament where as the Social Democratic Party lost one seat. The largest party in Parliament is the Republican Party with eight seats however Faroese politics has four big parties consisting of, in addition to the Republican Party, the People’s Party and the Unionist Party with seven seats each as well as the Social Democratic Party with now six seats. Women’s representation is up from tree seats to seven seats of 33.
A reform last year changed the electoral districts from seven constituencies to one.
Negotiations are currently held about forming a new coalition. The latest government was a coalition between Social Democratic Party, People’s Party and Unionist Party.

People’s Party: 6233 votes. 20,1%. 7 mandates. -0,5 percentage point
Unionist Party: 6521 votes. 21,0%. 7 mandates. -2,7 percentage points
Social Democratic Party: 6016 votes. 19,4%. 6 mandates. -2,4 percentage points
Independence Party: 2243 votes. 7,2%. 2 mandates. +2,6 percentage points
Republican Party: 7238 votes. 23,3%. 8 mandates. +1,6 percentage points
Centre Party: 2603 votes. 8,4%. 3 mandates. +3,2 percentage points
Students’ Party: 221 votes. 0,7%. 0 mandates.
