The Minister of Foreign Affairs meets with the NATO Secretary General
‘NATO remains the best guarantor of peace and security in the North Atlantic Region,’ says Jørgen Niclasen Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Faroe Islands. He was satisfied with the briefing and assurances received during the meeting with the NATO Secretary General.
On Tuesday, Minister Niclasen met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen at the NATO headquarters in Brussels to seek insight into security policies pertaining to the Faroe Islands.
The Minister was briefed on NATO’s current priorities and challenges. The Secretary General explained how NATO is preparing to solve some of the major issues in NATO security policy.
The Minister also received information on current NATO activities, including the state and role of NATO in Afghanistan and the efforts to repair and restore the country.
Security policy for the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas was discussed as well as the challenges ahead. Climate change is likely to lead to increased traffic in the area, while several countries are working to make claims to the North Pole and its resources. These are matters that will have security policy implications in the coming years.
Shipping near the coast of Somalia has been affected by pirates. To address this threat, NATO has deployed several vessels to the area to provide security and defence for the ships there. The NATO Secretary General gave his assurances that this protection also extends to Faroese-flagged vessels.
